How to Prepare Your Car for Its MOT Test: A Practical Checklist
If your vehicle is due for an MOT, a few simple checks can help prevent a fail and avoid retesting delays. Many MOT failures are caused by issues that could have been fixed easily at home before the test.
1. Check All Lights
Walk around the vehicle and check:
Headlights
Sidelights
Brake lights
Indicators
Number plate lights
If anything is dim, flickering, or not working, replace the bulb.
2. Inspect Your Tyres
Your tyre tread must be at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre surface.
Also check for:
Cuts
Bulges
Exposed cords
Uneven wear
Incorrect tyre pressure can also affect braking and handling, so inflate to the recommended PSI.
3. Make Sure the Number Plates Are Clean and Legal
Your plates must:
Be clearly readable
Use standard UK spacing and fonts
Be securely fixed
If plates are dirty, give them a quick clean.
4. Check Windscreen and Wipers
Make sure there are no major cracks or chips in the driver’s line of sight.
Wipers should clear the screen effectively without smearing.
