Keyless Car Theft — How a Ghost Immobiliser Protects Your Car

How keyless theft actually works

Keyless entry is convenient, but it has created a whole category of theft known as a relay attack. Two thieves work together: one stands near your house with a device that picks up the signal from your key fob inside, and relays it to a second device held near the car, tricking it into thinking the key is present. The car unlocks and starts, and it is gone in under a minute.

It requires no force, leaves no damage, and is silent — which is exactly why keyless cars from popular manufacturers are targeted. A steering lock helps, and keeping your fob in a signal-blocking pouch reduces the risk, but neither stops a determined thief who can start the car.

What a ghost immobiliser is

A ghost immobiliser is a small electronic device wired discreetly into the car that stops the engine from starting unless a personal PIN sequence is entered first — using buttons the car already has, such as those on the steering wheel or door panels. Without that sequence, the car will not start even with the genuine key.

Because it communicates over the car existing data network and adds no key fob or radio signal of its own, there is nothing for a thief to clone, relay, or detect. Even if they defeat the factory system, the car simply will not drive.

Why it is effective

A ghost immobiliser is silent and invisible — there is no flashing LED or add-on box for a thief to find and bypass. It does not interfere with the manufacturer warranty, it can be set to require the PIN only when needed, and a service mode lets you hand the car to a valet or garage without revealing your sequence.

For owners of frequently targeted models, it is one of the most effective and least intrusive ways to defeat relay theft, and it works alongside a tracker for an added layer of security.
