Why your air con stops blowing cold
Air conditioning relies on a sealed system of refrigerant that is compressed, cooled, and expanded to draw heat out of the cabin. Over time a small amount of refrigerant escapes naturally through the seals and hoses — most systems lose around 10 to 15 percent of their charge every year. When the level drops far enough, the system can no longer cool effectively and the air coming from the vents feels warm or only mildly cool.
A loss of cold air is not always just a low charge, though. A failed compressor, a blocked condenser, a stuck blend flap, a faulty pressure sensor, or a leak at a pipe union can all produce the same warm-air symptom. That is why we never simply top a system up without checking why it is low in the first place.
Why a regas is not always the fix
A regas removes the old refrigerant, vacuum-tests the system to confirm it holds pressure, and recharges it to the exact manufacturer specification. If your system has lost charge gradually through normal seepage, a regas restores cold air and is all that is needed. But if there is an actual leak, a regas will only work for a few weeks before the refrigerant escapes again.
Refrigerant is also expensive and releasing it into the atmosphere is illegal, so blindly refilling a leaking system wastes money and harms the environment. We add a UV dye or use an electronic leak detector to find the source first, then advise whether a regas alone will hold or whether a seal, pipe, or condenser needs replacing before recharging.
Signs your air con needs attention
Warm or weak airflow, a musty smell when you first switch it on, unusual noises from the dashboard or engine bay when the air con engages, or windows that take a long time to demist are all signs the system needs a look. A musty smell in particular usually means bacteria and mould have built up on the evaporator — an anti-bacterial treatment clears it and stops it returning.
Running your air con regularly, even in winter, keeps the compressor seals lubricated and helps prevent leaks developing in the first place. Most manufacturers recommend a regas every two to three years, and many drivers only discover their system is low when the first warm week of summer arrives.
