Kerbed alloys are the single most common thing drivers bring to our bodywork department. A scuffed rim looks worse than almost any other damage of its size, and on a lease or PCP car it is the item most likely to trigger an end-of-contract charge. Urban Autohaus refurbishes alloy wheels at our West Bromwich workshop on Cornwallis Road, using the same enclosed spray booth and two-pack paint systems as our panel work.
Refurbishment is not a cover-up. The wheel is stripped of its old lacquer and paint, the kerb damage is filled and reprofiled so the rim edge is straight again, then the wheel is primed, colour matched to your original finish and lacquered. What alloy wheel refurbishment involves
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Inspection for buckles, cracks and corrosion before any work is quoted.
- Tyres removed where the damage runs to the rim edge or bead seat.
- Old lacquer and paint stripped back to bare alloy.
- Kerb damage filled and the rim profile rebuilt and sanded true.
- Primer, colour coat matched to your original finish, and a protective lacquer.
- Wheels refitted and balanced, tyre pressures set before you collect.

- How much does alloy wheel refurbishment cost in West Bromwich?
- It depends on the wheel size, the finish and how bad the damage is — a light scuff on a standard silver wheel is a very different job to a deeply gouged 20-inch gloss black rim. We look at the wheels, tell you what each one needs, and give you a written price per wheel before anything is started. There is no charge for the assessment.
- Can you repair a kerbed alloy without replacing the wheel?
- In most cases, yes. Kerb rash, scuffs and light gouging are all repairable — the damaged area is filled, reprofiled and refinished. What we cannot safely repair is a cracked wheel or one that is buckled out of true, because those are structural. We check for both during the assessment and will tell you honestly if a wheel needs replacing rather than refurbishing.
- Do I need to leave the car with you?
- Usually yes, for a day or two. Stripping, filling, painting and lacquering each need proper drying time between stages, and rushing that is exactly what causes a refurbished wheel to peel later. If you need the car in the meantime we can discuss doing the wheels in pairs so you are never off the road.
- Will the repaired wheel match my other wheels?
- That is the aim, and it is why we colour match rather than working from a generic silver. We match against your original finish so a single refurbished wheel sits properly alongside the untouched three. If your existing wheels are heavily faded or corroded, we will tell you up front — in that case doing all four gives a far better result than doing one.
- Is it worth refurbishing alloys before returning a lease car?
- Almost always. Lease and PCP end-of-contract inspections charge for kerb damage on each wheel, and those charges are typically well above what a refurbishment costs. If your contract is coming to an end, bring the car in and we will tell you which wheels would fail an inspection and what it would cost to put right.
