After a collision the damage you can see is rarely the whole story. A front-end impact that looks like a bent bumper and a broken headlight can also have pushed a crash beam back, disturbed the radiator support, thrown the tracking out or damaged suspension mounting points. This is the single biggest advantage of repairing an accident-damaged car at Urban Autohaus: we have a full mechanical workshop and MOT bay alongside the bodywork department, so the car is assessed for structural and mechanical damage as well as panel damage in one place.
Most body shops have to send a car elsewhere for the mechanical side, which adds a handover, a second booking and often a second delay. We do not. Structural straightening, panel replacement, painting in our own booth, and the mechanical and geometry checks afterwards all happen at our West Bromwich workshop on Cornwallis Road. Common questions
- Can I choose which garage repairs my car after an accident?
- Yes. Whichever insurer you are with, you have the right to choose your own repairer rather than accept the one your insurer suggests. Insurers will often steer you towards their approved network because of their commercial arrangements with it, but the choice is legally yours. If you would like us to repair your car, tell your insurer that you have your own repairer and give them our details.
- Do you deal with the insurance company directly?
- Yes. We assess the damage, prepare a detailed estimate with photographs, and deal with your insurer or their engineer on the technical side of the claim. You still handle the claim itself with your insurer, but you should not have to explain repair methods or argue about parts — that is our job, not yours.
- What if the accident was not my fault?
- If the other party has admitted liability, the cost of repair is recovered from their insurer, and you can still choose where the car is repaired. Bring us the details and we will produce the estimate needed. Be careful of unsolicited calls from accident management companies after a non-fault claim — you are not obliged to use anyone they recommend.
- How do you know if there is hidden damage?
- By looking for it properly. We inspect behind the damaged panels, check panel gaps and alignment against the undamaged side, and check suspension geometry and mounting points. Because we also have a mechanical workshop, we can put the car on a ramp and road test it rather than only inspecting the outside. Hidden damage found after a repair has been agreed is reported to your insurer as a supplementary estimate.
- How long will an accident repair take?
- It depends entirely on the extent of the damage and how quickly the insurer authorises the work and the parts arrive. A rear bumper and light unit might be a few days; a structural repair with several replacement panels can run to a few weeks. We give you a timescale once the damage is assessed and the work is authorised, and we tell you if a parts delay changes it rather than leaving you wondering.
