Check tyre pressures first
The simplest and most common cause of a car pulling to one side is unequal tyre pressures. If one tyre is significantly lower than the other on the same axle, the car will drift toward the underinflated side — particularly noticeable on a straight road or under braking.
Check all four tyre pressures against the recommended values in your handbook or on the sticker inside the driver door frame. If the pressures are correct and the car still pulls, the cause is elsewhere and a garage inspection is needed.
Wheel alignment — the most common mechanical cause
Wheel alignment refers to the angles at which your tyres contact the road. Correct alignment keeps the car travelling straight and ensures even tyre wear. If alignment is out, the car will drift to one side — most noticeable when you release the steering wheel on a straight and level road.
Alignment can be knocked out by a kerb strike, a pothole impact, or gradual wear on steering and suspension components. Driving with poor alignment causes tyres to wear unevenly and faster than normal. We advise a wheel alignment check after any suspension or steering work.
Brake drag — affects both handling and safety
A seized brake caliper applies constant pressure on one wheel even when you are not braking. This causes the car to pull toward that side during normal driving, and you may also notice uneven tyre wear, a burning smell after a journey, or one wheel running noticeably hotter than the others.
Brake drag is a safety concern as well as a handling issue. It affects stopping distance and vehicle stability. If you notice pulling alongside any of these symptoms, have the brakes inspected promptly rather than waiting.
