Why Will My Car Not Start?

Complete silence — the battery is the first suspect
If you turn the key or press the start button and hear nothing at all, the battery is the most likely cause. A flat or failed battery cannot supply enough current to turn the starter motor. You may also notice the dashboard lights are dim or not illuminating at all.
A battery can fail suddenly, but more often it gives warning signs first — slow cranking, the engine taking longer to catch, or the stop-start system disabling itself. Cold weather accelerates battery deterioration significantly. If your battery is over four years old and struggling, a replacement is usually the right solution rather than a temporary top-up charge.
Clicking sounds — starter motor or connection issue
A rapid clicking noise when you try to start the car usually indicates a battery that is too low to turn the engine but still has enough charge to activate the solenoid. This typically means the battery needs replacing rather than charging.
A single loud click when you turn the key may point to a faulty starter motor solenoid. If the battery tests healthy but the engine will not crank, the starter motor itself may have failed. We can test both the battery and the starting circuit to confirm which component is at fault.
Cranks but will not fire — fuel, ignition, or sensors
If the engine cranks normally but the car will not start, the battery is working but something else is not. Common causes include a failed fuel pump, a faulty crankshaft position sensor, a blocked fuel filter, or a failed ignition coil or injector. Without a valid signal from the crankshaft sensor, the ECU does not know when to inject fuel or trigger the spark — so the engine cannot fire even with fuel present.
Do not keep cranking for extended periods if the car will not fire. This can flatten the battery further or flood the engine with fuel. Call us on 07498 392333 and describe what happens when you try to start — that description alone helps us identify the likely area of fault before your car even comes in.
