What the EGR valve does
The EGR valve, or exhaust gas recirculation valve, feeds a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the engine to lower combustion temperatures and reduce emissions. It is found on both petrol and diesel engines, though diesels tend to suffer the most problems with it.
Because it handles hot, sooty exhaust gas, the valve gradually clogs with carbon. Over time it can stick open or closed, and that is when the running problems begin.
The symptoms of a faulty EGR valve
A valve stuck open causes a rough or lumpy idle, hesitation, and sometimes stalling, because too much exhaust gas is being let back in. A valve stuck closed raises combustion temperatures and emissions and can trigger a fault code. Either way you often see the engine warning light and a drop in fuel economy.
In many cases the engine management system will put the car into limp mode — a protective state that limits power and revs to prevent damage. If your car suddenly feels gutless and will not rev past a certain point, a sticking EGR valve is one of the common causes.
Clean or replace?
Whether the valve can be cleaned or needs replacing depends on its condition. A valve that is carboned up but mechanically sound can often be removed, cleaned, and refitted, which is the cheaper route. One that is worn, seized, or has a failed internal motor or sensor needs replacing.
