Solid vs flashing — why it matters
If your engine warning light is solid and not flashing, it usually means the engine management system has logged a fault code but the vehicle is still driveable. Do not ignore it — a solid light often indicates a sensor fault, emissions issue, or early mechanical problem — but you can typically drive the car to a garage to have it investigated.
A flashing or pulsing engine warning light is more serious. This usually indicates a severe misfire that could damage the catalytic converter. If your warning light is flashing, ease off the throttle, avoid high revs, and have the car checked as soon as possible. Do not continue driving normally with a flashing light.
