Worn brake pads — the most common cause
Brake pads have a wear indicator built into the friction material. When the pad wears down to this indicator, it creates a high-pitched squeal alerting you that replacement is needed. If you ignore this and the pad wears through completely, the metal backing plate contacts the disc directly — producing a loud grinding noise and scoring the disc surface.
At this point you will need to replace both the pads and the discs, which is significantly more expensive than a pad-only change would have been earlier. The grinding from fully worn pads also reduces braking efficiency, making it a safety issue. Do not delay if you hear this noise.
Stone ingress — worth investigating even when it sounds harmless
A small stone or piece of road debris can become lodged between the brake pad and disc, producing a grinding or scraping sound that appears suddenly. Unlike worn pads, this noise is often present even when you are not braking — not just when you press the pedal.
Stone ingress can sometimes resolve itself as the debris works loose, but it can also score the disc surface if left. We recommend having it inspected rather than waiting — a quick check on the ramp confirms whether the disc has been damaged and whether any further action is needed.
Seized caliper — affects safety and tyre wear
A seized brake caliper keeps constant pressure on the brake pad against the disc even when you are not braking. This causes overheating, uneven tyre wear, reduced fuel economy, and a pulling sensation to one side. The noise from a seized caliper is usually continuous rather than only occurring under braking.
If your car is pulling to one side alongside the grinding noise, a seized caliper or sticking slide pin is a strong possibility. This needs prompt attention as it affects vehicle stability and will destroy tyres prematurely.
