What your suspension does
Your suspension keeps the tyres in contact with the road, soaks up bumps, and keeps the car stable when you steer, brake, and corner. It is built from springs, dampers, and a set of joints and bushes that let the wheels move while staying correctly located.
These parts wear slowly, so many drivers get used to a deteriorating ride without noticing how much grip and control they have lost. A knock or clunk over bumps is usually the first obvious sign that something has worn past the point where it should be replaced.
Common causes of knocks and clunks
A single knock over a bump or pothole often points to a worn anti-roll bar link or bush — among the most common and least expensive suspension items to fail. A heavier clunk can mean a worn ball joint, a top strut mount, or a suspension arm bush that has perished.
If the car also feels floaty, keeps bouncing after a bump, or the tyres are wearing unevenly, the dampers themselves may be worn. Worn suspension lengthens your stopping distance and reduces grip in the wet, so it is a safety issue as much as a comfort one.
Why it matters for your MOT
Suspension is checked at every MOT, and worn or damaged parts are a common cause of failure. Excessive play in a ball joint, a leaking damper, a broken spring, or a perished bush can all be recorded as a Major defect and fail the test.
Many suspension parts are inexpensive to replace once diagnosed, and catching a worn link or bush early stops it putting extra strain on the parts around it. Left alone, a small knock can lead to accelerated tyre wear and a bigger bill later.
