How a clutch wears out
The clutch is a friction component — every time you pull away or change gear, the clutch plate is briefly slipping against the flywheel, and a thin layer of the friction material wears away. Over tens of thousands of miles that material gradually wears down, much like a brake pad, until eventually it can no longer grip fully.
How long a clutch lasts depends heavily on how and where the car is driven. Lots of stop-start town driving, towing, or riding the clutch pedal wears it faster, while steady motorway miles are gentler. Most clutches last somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, but there is no fixed lifespan.
The warning signs of a failing clutch
The clearest sign is slipping: the engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate in proportion, most noticeable in higher gears or going uphill. You may also find the biting point has moved much higher up the pedal travel than it used to be, which is a sign the clutch is worn and self-adjusting to compensate.
Other symptoms include a juddering sensation as you pull away, a heavy or stiff clutch pedal, difficulty selecting gears, or a burning smell after pulling away on a hill. A grinding or rumbling noise when the pedal is pressed can point to the release bearing rather than the clutch plate itself.
Why prompt diagnosis saves money
A slipping clutch will not fix itself and tends to deteriorate quickly once it starts. Driving on a badly slipping clutch generates a lot of heat, which can damage the flywheel — and a damaged flywheel turns a straightforward clutch job into a much larger and more expensive one.
Because the clutch is buried behind the gearbox, most of the cost of the job is the labour to reach it. That means it usually makes sense to replace the clutch as a complete kit — plate, cover, and release bearing together — and to inspect the flywheel while everything is apart, rather than paying twice for access.
