What the timing belt or chain does
The timing belt or chain keeps the top and bottom of your engine turning in perfect sync, so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment relative to the pistons. If that sync is lost, the valves and pistons can collide — and on the interference engines used in most modern cars, that means serious internal damage.
Some engines use a rubber timing belt, others a metal chain. Both do the same job but wear differently and have very different service needs, so the first thing to establish is which one your car has.
Belts have a fixed interval
A timing belt is a service item with a defined replacement interval, typically between 60,000 and 100,000 miles or every four to six years, whichever comes first. The rubber ages with time as well as mileage, so even a low-mileage car needs the belt changed on schedule. Many belts also drive the water pump, which is replaced at the same time because most of the labour is in the access.
If you have bought a used car and cannot prove when the belt was last changed, treat it as due. A snapped belt almost always costs far more to put right than the planned replacement job.
Chains do not last forever either
Timing chains are designed to last much longer than belts, but they are not maintenance-free. Chains stretch over time, and the tensioners and guides that keep them tight wear out — some engines are well known for chain problems before 100,000 miles.
A stretched chain often warns you with a rattle from the front of the engine on cold start-up, a timing-related fault code, or rough running. If you hear a rattle that fades after a few seconds when starting from cold, have it checked before it gets worse.
