Turbo Failure Warning Signs Every Driver Should Know

What a turbo does and why it fails

A turbocharger forces more air into the engine so it can burn more fuel and make more power from a given size. It spins at enormous speeds and relies on a constant supply of clean engine oil to lubricate and cool its bearings.

Most turbo failures come down to oil — a lack of it, a dirty supply, or oil that has broken down from missed services. Sucking in debris through a damaged air intake, or repeatedly switching off a hot engine without letting it idle, can also shorten a turbo life.

The warning signs

The classic signs of a failing turbo are a noticeable loss of power, a high-pitched whine or siren-like noise that rises with the revs, and blue or grey smoke from the exhaust as the failing seals let oil into the exhaust stream. You may also notice the oil level dropping between services.

A boost-related fault code and the engine going into limp mode are also common, as the management system protects the engine when it detects the turbo is not delivering the expected boost. Any of these together should be investigated quickly.

Why acting early matters

A turbo that is starting to fail can, in the worst case, break up internally and send debris or oil into the engine, turning a turbo repair into a much larger engine repair. Catching it early usually means a straightforward turbo replacement rather than a catastrophe.

Just as important is finding out why the turbo failed. Fitting a new turbo without fixing the oil supply problem that killed the old one simply destroys the new part too, so we always diagnose the underlying cause.
