Why Is My Steering Wheel Vibrating? Causes and Fixes

28 May 2026 · 5 min read

When the vibration happens tells you a lot

The speed and conditions under which a steering wheel vibrates are the biggest clue to the cause. A wobble that appears at a particular speed on the motorway and eases off above or below it usually points to wheel balance. A vibration that comes only when you brake points to the brakes. A steady pull or shimmy all the time points to alignment or a worn suspension part.

Paying attention to exactly when it happens — braking, accelerating, a set speed, or all the time — helps us diagnose it quickly and accurately.

Wheel balance and alignment

Wheels need small balance weights to spin smoothly at speed. If a weight is lost, or a tyre has worn unevenly, the wheel becomes unbalanced and the steering wheel shakes at motorway speeds. Rebalancing the wheels is a quick, inexpensive fix.

Alignment, or tracking, is different: if the wheels are not pointing straight ahead, the car pulls to one side and the tyres scrub and wear unevenly, which can cause a shimmy. Hitting a kerb or pothole is a common cause. Correcting the alignment protects your tyres as well as curing the vibration.

When brakes or suspension are to blame

A vibration felt through the steering wheel or pedal only when you brake usually means warped brake discs. Heat and wear can distort a disc so it is no longer perfectly flat, and you feel that as a pulsing under braking. Worn discs and pads are replaced together.

If the vibration is there all the time and comes with knocking or vague steering, a worn wheel bearing, ball joint, or track rod end may be the cause. These are safety-related and should be checked promptly.
