The 1.4 Turbo petrol engine was used widely by Vauxhall from around 2010, including the Astra J, Insignia A, Mokka, Zafira Tourer, Cascada and Meriva. It is a punchy, economical engine, but it has a well-known weakness: the cooling system. The thermostat housing and several connectors are plastic, and the small coolant pipes that feed the turbo can weep at their joints.
Owners usually notice a low coolant warning, a sweet smell after a drive, pink or white crusty deposits around the top of the engine, or steam from under the bonnet. Some cars overheat or show a temperature warning in traffic. The water pump can also leak on higher-mileage engines.
A small leak is cheap to fix; an overheated engine is not. Running low on coolant can warp the cylinder head and damage the head gasket, and a turbo that runs short of coolant can fail early. A regular need to top up coolant on one of these cars should always be checked.
We pressure-test the cooling system to find exactly where the coolant is escaping — thermostat housing, turbo pipes, water pump, hoses or the expansion tank — and quote to fix that part. - Can I just use a leak sealant?
- We do not recommend it. Sealants can block small coolant passages, including the turbo feed, and they do not fix a cracked plastic housing.
