The 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol engines fitted to many Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT models from around 2008 to 2012 are known for heavy oil consumption. The main cause on these engines is piston rings with small oil drain holes that clog with carbon, so the rings stick and oil gets past them into the combustion chamber. Some cars use a litre every thousand miles or worse.
It matters because running an engine low on oil damages it quickly, and the timing chain and tensioner on these engines are less forgiving when oil level and quality slip. Burning oil also fouls spark plugs, can damage the catalytic converter and leaves carbon on the valves. Owners often only notice when the low oil warning comes on — by then the level may already be well down.
Not every oil-hungry TFSI has the ring problem. A failed crankcase breather (PCV) valve, worn valve stem seals, a leaking turbo seal or simple external oil leaks can all cause oil loss, and some are far cheaper to fix. We start with a measured consumption test and inspection, then a compression and leak-down test to see what is really going on inside the engine.
Where the rings are the cause, the proper repair is replacement pistons and rings, which is a substantial job. On an older, higher-mileage car we will talk you through whether that is worth it or whether careful monitoring is the better call. Either way you get a clear written quote first. - Any engine using enough that you need to top up between services is worth checking. On the affected TFSI engines, a litre every one to two thousand miles or worse points strongly to the piston ring problem.
- Which Audi engines are affected?
- Mainly the 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI chain-driven petrols built from around 2008 to 2012, fitted to the A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT. Later versions had revised pistons and are much less affected.
- Can an additive or oil change fix it?
- Cleaning products occasionally help a lightly stuck ring, but they do not fix the design of the original pistons. We will tell you honestly if we think it is worth trying before any bigger job.
