Since Vauxhall joined the Stellantis group, many of its petrol models use the 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder engine — the Corsa F from 2019, the newer Mokka, Crossland, Grandland and the Astra L. This engine drives its camshafts with a toothed belt that runs inside the engine oil, known as a wet belt. It is quiet and efficient when looked after, but the belt can swell and shed material early.
As the belt breaks down, rubber particles collect in the oil and can block the oil pickup strainer, starving the engine of oil pressure. On these engines the brake vacuum pump is also oil-fed, so a "low brake assist" or similar message can appear. Other signs include an oil pressure warning, an engine light and higher oil consumption. Often there is no warning until it is serious.
The cost of ignoring it can be severe. Low oil pressure damages bearings and the turbo, and a belt that fails completely can cause major engine damage. Measuring the belt and checking the strainer is quick compared with the cost of an engine, which is why we recommend a check on any PureTech with unknown history or high oil use.
We measure the belt width against the manufacturer limit, inspect the oil and sump strainer for debris, and replace the belt, tensioner and associated parts where needed.
