Earlier 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrol engines, known as the EA111 family and fitted from around 2006 to 2012–2013, drive their camshafts with a chain rather than a belt. They are found in the Golf Mk5 and Mk6, Polo, Tiguan, Touran, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Ibiza and Leon and Skoda Fabia and Octavia. On these engines the chain can stretch and the tensioner can lose pressure, especially when oil changes have been stretched out.
The first sign is usually a rattle lasting a few seconds after a cold start, before oil pressure builds. As it gets worse you may see the engine light with camshaft timing fault codes, rough running or a loss of power. The later EA211 engines that replaced them from around 2012–2013 use a timing belt and do not share this fault — so confirming which engine you have is the first job.
If the chain jumps a tooth, the valves can hit the pistons and the repair becomes a cylinder head job or a replacement engine. Replacing the chain, tensioner and guides when the rattle first appears costs a fraction of that, which is why we never advise waiting to see if it gets worse.
We confirm the engine code, listen on a genuine cold start and read the camshaft timing values with VAG-compatible diagnostics.
