VW 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF repair
Limp mode, an engine light or a DPF warning on a TDI usually trace back to the EGR system or a loaded DPF. We test before replacing anything — book a diagnostic check.
Why book with us
VW 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF repair with clear advice.
The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels used across the Volkswagen Group — Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Transporter, Audi A3 and A4, SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia among them — rely on exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to cut emissions and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to trap soot. Both systems are sensitive to how the car is used, and both are among the most common reasons a TDI arrives at our workshop.
EGR valves stick with soot, EGR coolers can block or leak, and the sensors that watch the DPF can fail. The result is an engine light, limp mode with very little power, a DPF warning that will not clear, or a car that starts to smoke. Cars and vans that mostly do short local trips are hit hardest, because the DPF never gets hot enough for long enough to burn its soot away.
Left alone, these faults get more expensive. A DPF that keeps failing to regenerate fills up until it needs a professional clean or replacement, and repeated failed regenerations can dilute the engine oil with diesel. A sticking EGR valve can lead to a clogged intake and poor running that affects fuel economy and the MOT emissions test.
We read live data — EGR position, DPF soot load and pressure difference — rather than simply clearing codes. That tells us whether a forced regeneration, an EGR clean, a sensor, or a new part is the right answer. You get a clear quote and our honest view on which fix will last. Call 07498 392333 or book a diagnostic check at our West Bromwich workshop.
Live data diagnosis
EGR position, soot load and DPF pressure read before any part is quoted.
Clean before replace
Where cleaning or a forced regeneration will do the job, we say so.

What our TDI EGR and DPF work includes
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Full fault code read and live data check of EGR, boost and DPF sensors.
- EGR valve cleaning or replacement, plus EGR cooler inspection.
- DPF soot and ash assessment, forced regeneration where safe to do so.
- DPF pressure sensor and temperature sensor testing and replacement.
- Oil level and condition check for diesel dilution after failed regenerations.

Common questions
- Why does my TDI go into limp mode?
- On TDI engines the most common causes are a sticking EGR valve, a blocked DPF or a boost fault. Limp mode protects the engine, so we read the fault memory and live data to find which one it is.
- Can a blocked DPF be cleaned rather than replaced?
- Often yes, if the filter is not cracked or packed with ash. We check the soot load and pressure readings to decide whether a regeneration, a clean or a new filter is right.
- Will short journeys keep causing the problem?
- They make it more likely. A regular longer run at steady speed helps the DPF clear itself. We can advise on driving habits that suit a diesel, or whether a petrol might suit your use better next time.
