Volkswagen Group DSG gearboxes, called S tronic on Audi, come in two main types. The 7-speed DQ200 used behind smaller engines — 1.2 and 1.4 TSI, 1.6 TDI — has dry clutches and sealed-for-life gear oil. The 6-speed DQ250 and 7-speed DQ381/DQ500 used on larger engines have wet clutches running in oil that needs changing, typically every 40,000 miles. Knowing which one you have decides both what goes wrong and how it should be looked after.
On the dry-clutch DQ200 the common complaints are judder when pulling away, clunks at low speed, and a flashing gear indicator followed by the car losing drive. These are usually caused by a worn clutch pack or a fault in the mechatronic unit, the hydraulic and electronic brain that controls the gearbox. On the wet-clutch gearboxes, missed oil changes lead to slow or rough shifts and, eventually, clutch and mechatronic wear.
Ignoring a DSG fault is costly. A mechatronic fault can leave you stranded without drive, and running a worn clutch pack for too long can damage the flywheel. Caught early, many issues are solved with a software update, a clutch adaptation or an oil service rather than a new gearbox.
We read the gearbox control unit with VAG-compatible diagnostics, check clutch wear values and adaptation data, and road test the car before recommending anything. Where the fix is an oil service or basic setting, we do that. Where it is a clutch pack or mechatronic unit, we quote clearly and explain the options, including repair versus replacement. Common questions
- Does my DSG need an oil change?
- Wet-clutch DSGs such as the 6-speed DQ250 need an oil change, usually every 40,000 miles. The 7-speed DQ200 used on smaller engines is not normally serviced. Give us your registration and we will tell you which you have.
- Why does my DSG judder when pulling away?
- On the 7-speed dry-clutch DQ200, judder is usually a worn clutch pack or a mechatronic issue. Sometimes a clutch adaptation or software update helps. We read the clutch wear data before advising.
- Do I need a whole new gearbox?
- Usually not. Most DSG faults are in the clutch pack or mechatronic unit, which can be replaced on their own. We only recommend a full gearbox when the internal gears or bearings are damaged.
